Artificial Sweeteners – Sweet Suicide?

As a growing number of  people have become aware of the risks of a high-sugar diet, the artificial sweetener industry has skyrocketed to a generating an estimated $1.5 billion dollars a year!  Now, artificial sweeteners are routinely being added to more and more foods.  In some cases, people may not even realize what they are consuming.    Many Americans automatically assume that if a product is in widespread use, it must be safe.  If you consume artificial sweeteners, read on to learn what artificially pleasing your “sweet tooth” is doing to the rest of your body…

There are several different artificial sweeteners on the market.  The most common are:

  • Aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet, Spoonful and Equal-Measure)
  • Sucralose (Splenda)
  • Saccharin (Sweet’N Low)


Aspartame is the most dangerous of all artificial sweeteners and may possibly rein as the most harmful food additive in general. It is an excitotoxin and is known to breakdown into formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent.  Over 75% of food additive adverse reactions reported to the FDA are for aspartame consumption. Seizure and death account for many of the reactions noted.

There are 90 different symptoms of aspartame that have documented. Some include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Numbness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Weight gain
  • Rashes
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Tachycardia
  • Insomnia
  • Vision problems
  • Hearing loss
  • Heart palpitations
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of taste
  • Tinnitus
  • Vertigo
  • Memory loss
  • Joint pain

Researchers and doctors who studied the side effects of aspartame concluded that consumption can trigger or aggravate many different conditions and illnesses such as:

  • Brain tumors
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Mental retardation
  • Lymphoma
  • Birth defects
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Diabetes


Sucrulose is yet another artificial sweetener that has ruined its name in research.  Eating sucrulose has been shown to:

  • Decrease red blood cells
  • Increase male infertility
  • Can lead to enlarged and calcified kidneys
  • Increase risk for spontaneous abortion
  • 4 times greater death rate in rabbits fed sucrulose compared to control group


Studies on saccharin were conducted by The Purdue University’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center.  Scientists compared rats that ate yogurt sweetened with glucose to rats that ate yogurt with saccharin.  The rats consuming saccharin:

  • Consumed more calories
  • Gained more weight
  • Gained more body fat
  • Had a decreased core body temperature after eating

If all Americans were aware of the lack of long-term research performed on artificial sweeteners as well as the plentiful evidence of harm, the market would virtually disappear overnight.  This is just another example of a disastrous decision that unknowing people make in the name of health.
